Reservoir, a startup co-founded by Luke Winston-Almanzar, has raised $8 million in seed funding to develop intelligent water heaters that address both household energy costs and grid stability. Traditional water heaters are inefficient, accounting for 18% of residential energy use and contributing to significant water damage. Reservoir’s solution uses predictive heating technology to heat water during low-demand periods, reducing energy costs by up to $1,000 annually for Boston homeowners. The system also includes features like an ultrasonic flow sensor for leak detection and a recirculation valve for instant hot water. By aggregating its fleet of heaters, Reservoir aims to participate in utility demand response programs, further stabilizing the grid. Priced at $5,000 for the Core model (with installation) and $6,500 for the Max version, the product competes with existing heat pump models while offering a 10-year warranty. The company’s approach combines advanced technology with affordability, positioning it as a potential disruptor in the energy storage market.
