SteelSeries Apex Pro Mini Gen 3: Compact but Flawed Hall Effect Keyboard at a Premium Price
The SteelSeries Apex Pro Mini Gen 3 is a 60% Hall effect keyboard that brings a compact layout and fully programmable features, but struggles to justify its $220 price tag. Built with OmniPoint 3.0 switches manufactured by Gateron, the keyboard offers a smooth typing experience with adjustable actuation points. However, the benefits of its dual-rail switch design are marginal compared to standard mechanical switches. Although the keyboard feels solid and includes thoughtful design elements like a hidden switch puller and internal steel weights, its plastic case and tray-mounted build don’t quite match the expectations for its premium price range.
Its gaming performance is solid, thanks to features like Rapid Trigger and Protection Mode, but the bundled SteelSeries GG software is underwhelming, with cluttered menus and distracting ads. The keyboard lacks wireless connectivity and only supports a 1,000 Hz polling rate, which lags behind competitors like Wooting’s 8,000 Hz models. While the RGB customization is decent, it’s dimmer and more limited compared to rival offerings.
Overall, while the Apex Pro Mini excels in responsiveness and portability, it is difficult to recommend over similar and often cheaper alternatives from Wooting or Keychron, which offer comparable or superior features at a better value.
