Rogers and Freedom Mobile Confirm Recent Data Breaches Affecting Customer Information
Quebecor Inc.’s Freedom Mobile and Rogers Communications Inc., along with its subsidiary Fido, have both reported recent data breaches affecting customer information, though no financial data was compromised. Freedom Mobile disclosed that in January, a third party accessed its customer account management system using subcontractor credentials, exposing names, addresses, dates of birth, phone numbers, and account numbers. The company indicated there is no evidence of misuse and notified affected customers by March 18. Rogers confirmed a similar incident affecting customer names, contact details, account numbers, and language preferences, while assuring that sensitive financial information, Social Insurance Numbers, and passwords remained secure. These incidents come amid heightened cyber threats in Canada, including recent attacks on Telus Digital by the hacker group ShinyHunters, who claimed to have stolen nearly one petabyte of customer data. The Canadian Centre for Cyber Security has warned telecom companies are frequent targets due to the volume of personal data they handle. Both Rogers and Freedom Mobile are reviewing third-party access controls and monitoring affected accounts for unusual activity. These breaches highlight ongoing cybersecurity challenges for Canadian telecommunications providers and the importance of proactive measures to protect customer information.
