Sam Altman Takes on Elon Musk’s Empire: OpenAI, Neuralink, and More

The rivalry between Sam Altman, CEO of OpenAI, and Elon Musk has escalated over the past year, with personal attacks, legal battles, and strategic moves targeting Musk’s major ventures. Initially, Musk and Altman co-founded OpenAI in 2015, but their relationship soured when Musk left the board in 2018. Tensions peaked in 2023, when Musk accused OpenAI of betraying its nonprofit mission and converted it into a for-profit company. Meanwhile, Altman has been steadily expanding his influence, both through OpenAI and his own investments, which increasingly challenge Musk’s empire. Altman is backing Merge Labs, a brain-computer interface startup, directly competing with Musk’s Neuralink. OpenAI is also positioning itself as a rival to Musk’s X (formerly Twitter) with plans to develop a social network. In addition, Altman’s investments, including in self-driving tech and a space company, further threaten Musk’s Tesla, SpaceX, and other ventures. Musk and Altman have filed lawsuits against each other, with no end in sight to the bitter feud. The rivalry has created a spectacle that many in Silicon Valley are watching closely, with some, like investor Vinod Khosla, seeing it as beneficial for the tech ecosystem. However, it’s clear that this personal and professional war between the two billionaires is only intensifying.
