Samsung Delays $44 Billion Texas Chip Manufacturing Facility Due to Lack of Demand

Samsung has decided to delay the opening of its $44 billion semiconductor fabrication plant in Taylor, Texas, due to challenges in securing customers for its chips. Originally intended to produce chips with a 4nm process node, the company is facing difficulties as the technology has rapidly evolved, and local demand is lower than expected. While construction is almost 92% complete, Samsung’s decision to push back the opening until 2026 comes after realizing that the original plans no longer align with current semiconductor market needs. The company will now aim for the more advanced 2nm process node to stay competitive with industry leaders like TSMC and Intel. This project, which began in 2022 with an initial investment of $17 billion, has been supported by a $6.6 billion subsidy from the U.S. government’s CHIPS Act. Delaying the project further could jeopardize billions already invested, but the company is opting for a ‘wait-and-see’ approach, given that overhauling the plant would be a costly and time-consuming undertaking.
