Samsung Galaxy Cameras May Automatically Switch to 12MP Under Certain Conditions

Samsung has explained that some Galaxy cameras, including the Z Fold 8 and S26 Ultra, can automatically switch from 24MP to 12MP resolution under specific conditions. These include scenarios like zooming, low-light photography, Motion Photo mode, flash use, continuous shooting beyond the third photo, and when device temperatures exceed 45°C. Users reported this behavior on Samsung’s Korean community forum and Reddit, prompting the company to clarify that the Camera Assistant app’s 24MP setting isn’t an absolute override. Instead, the phone prioritizes thermal stability and image quality safeguards in challenging conditions. Samsung recommends avoiding extreme temperatures, using 1x zoom, and spacing out rapid shots to maintain 24MP resolution. The behavior isn’t exclusive to the Z Fold 8, as some S26 Ultra owners also experienced similar issues. While not a software bug, the company emphasizes that environmental factors and technical safeguards can trigger the resolution downgrade.
