Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 prioritizes slim design over S Pen support, rethinking its future
The Samsung Galaxy Z Fold 7 and Z Flip 7 represent a significant step forward for the company’s foldable devices. However, Samsung has acknowledged that sacrifices were made to achieve their ultra-thin designs. In an interview with Korea’s ET News, Kang Min-seok, Managing Director of Samsung MX, discussed the controversial decisions behind the Fold 7’s features, particularly the absence of the S Pen support. Samsung has decided to emphasize a slim, lightweight design with the Fold 7, resulting in a trade-off: thinner and lighter body means the removal of certain features, such as the digitizer for the S Pen. Samsung clarified that these choices are intentional, as the company strives for a perfect balance between design and functionality. Kang mentioned that Samsung is researching and developing thinner, more innovative technologies for future versions of the S Pen, with hopes of incorporating it into foldables once consumer demand and technical capabilities align. The Fold 7 also boasts a redesigned frame and a significantly lighter and thinner foldable display. The Flip 7, on the other hand, benefits from enhanced battery life thanks to more efficient use of space. Despite the lack of some features, both devices are seen as advancements in the foldable category, with the focus on continuous development. The Z Fold 7 is now available for pre-order, shipping from July 25th.
