San Nicolás Empowers Older Adults with Digital and Financial Skills

San Nicolás de los Garza, a municipality in Nuevo León, recently graduated 53 older adults from the workshops ‘Technology in my favor’ and ‘Financial Education’, led by Mayor Daniel Carrillo Martínez. This initiative was created to reduce the digital gap and strengthen the autonomy of older adults, offering essential contemporary skills ranging from mobile phone use to secure digital payment and procedures management. The program, known as ‘Huellas Mayores’, reflects the municipality’s commitment to continuous training for older adults, promoting practical and relevant learning aligned with today’s digital and financial realities. Graduates have demonstrated acquired digital tool mastery publicly, with some being specially recognized for completing five technology training sessions this year. Despite these advances, challenges remain, particularly in ensuring equitable digital inclusion for sectors with limited access to connectivity or devices. The municipal strategy involves ongoing support and training to expand reach and help more older adults take advantage of digital opportunities. This experience in San Nicolás de los Garza shows that digital and financial training can transform the lives of older adults, enhancing their autonomy and societal participation.
