ScotRail Tests Starlink Satellite Wi-Fi on Rural Train Routes

ScotRail has launched a six-month trial of satellite-based wi-fi on six of its trains operating in the north of Scotland, using Elon Musk’s Starlink technology. This marks the first time such a system has been used for passenger wi-fi in the UK. The initiative targets remote train routes such as Inverness to Wick, Thurso, Kyle of Lochalsh, and Aberdeen, aiming to improve internet connectivity in areas traditionally underserved. If successful, the technology may be extended to additional services across the south of Scotland and implemented in other class 158 trains on rural lines like the West Highlands, Stranraer, Dumfries, and the Borders. The trial is a collaboration between ScotRail and Clarus Networks, a UK provider of Starlink satellite services. Business Minister Richard Lochhead expressed that better connectivity would enhance passenger experience, while ScotRail’s planning director, Scott Prentice, emphasized the potential for wider deployment. The project also aims to inform future procurement decisions regarding new trains. Elon Musk, whose involvement has sparked political controversy in Scotland, remains a key figure due to Starlink’s provision of the core technology. Despite criticisms, the focus remains on bridging the digital divide in Scotland’s rural transport network.
