Seeing Machines Introduces Alcohol Impairment Detection Technology for Vehicles

On September 9, 2025, Seeing Machines revealed a new capability in its Driver Monitoring System (DMS) technology, now able to detect alcohol-related impairment in drivers. This breakthrough comes as MADD (Mothers Against Drunk Driving) marks its 45th anniversary, coinciding with an event in Washington D.C. where many gathered to honor victims of drunk driving accidents. The new technology builds on the company’s existing DMS, which already detects distracted and drowsy driving in over 3.7 million cars and 60,000 trucks worldwide. After rigorous testing and research, Seeing Machines has successfully added the ability to identify alcohol impairment ranging from a .05 BAC to higher levels, directly addressing global road safety concerns. With a particular focus on those driving with BAC levels above .15, a range that accounts for a significant number of alcohol-impaired fatalities, the technology aims to reduce such incidents significantly. In 2024, Seeing Machines proposed a detailed plan to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) to gradually integrate this technology in vehicles. The new system would alert drivers when impairment is detected, encourage them to pull over, and eventually limit vehicle capabilities to reduce risk.
