Microsoft Retires Skype in May 2025: Transition Plan for Users and Paid Services
Microsoft has announced it will officially retire Skype on May 5, 2025, after over two decades of service. The decision comes as the tech giant pivots its focus to Microsoft Teams Free, a more modern communication platform designed to offer advanced features for messaging, calls, and file sharing. Skype users can continue accessing their accounts using the same login credentials in Teams, where chat history and contact lists will automatically transfer. For those unwilling to switch, Microsoft allows users to download their chat history and contacts before the shutdown. Paid users will see their subscriptions continue until their next renewal ends, and existing Skype Credit can still be used via the Dial Pad function. Users with Skype Numbers may retain them until current payments expire but will need to migrate elsewhere if they wish to keep using the number afterward. Alternatives to Skype include Zoom, WhatsApp, Discord, and VoIP platforms like Sonetel. Microsoft encourages users to explore their options before the shutdown, offering Teams Free as the preferred migration path. With the deadline approaching, users are advised to back up their data and plan accordingly.
