Snapchat introduces paid storage plans for Memories feature exceeding 5GB

Snapchat has announced a significant change to its Memories feature, which since 2016 has allowed users to save photos and videos indefinitely. Under the new policy, users who have saved more than 5GB of content will now need to pay for additional storage. While Snap has not disclosed detailed pricing for the UK, it has confirmed that a 100GB storage plan will cost $1.99 per month, with larger capacities included in the Snapchat+ and Snapchat Premium subscriptions. For example, the $3.99 subscription will include 250GB of storage. The company emphasized that most Snapchat users store less than 5GB and therefore will not be affected. However, those who have relied on the free service for years and accumulated large collections of Memories could face substantial costs if they wish to retain them on the platform. To ease the transition, Snap will provide a 12-month grace period of temporary storage, while also allowing users to download their saved content to their devices. Despite this, many users on social media have criticized the move as unfair and greedy, saying that essential features should remain free. Snap defended the change, stating that the new system will help the company continue investing in the Memories feature and improve the service. Analysts believe that charging for storage may become an inevitable trend across social media platforms, given the shift toward saving more content rather than posting it publicly. Snapchat currently has over 900 million monthly active users, though competitors such as Instagram and TikTok maintain larger user bases.
