Samsung Sends 2nm Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 Sample to Qualcomm for Evaluation

Samsung has produced a sample of Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Gen 5 chipset using its advanced 2nm Gate-All-Around (GAA) process and recently sent it to Qualcomm for evaluation. This development marks a significant milestone for Samsung Foundry as it seeks to become a dual-source manufacturer alongside TSMC, which currently produces the chip using a 3nm process. The 2nm GAA technology offers superior transistor control and energy efficiency due to the transistor gate surrounding the channel on all sides, potentially translating to better performance and lower power consumption. Qualcomm will conduct rigorous testing of the sample’s power efficiency, performance, heat generation, yield, and reliability before deciding on mass production approval. If Samsung meets Qualcomm’s standards, this could lead to a competitive sourcing partnership, easing supply chain constraints and potentially lowering production costs. However, Samsung still faces challenges related to yield rates and schedule management. The testing and trial production phase could take six months to a year. Success in this endeavor could shake up the semiconductor industry and challenge TSMC’s dominance in flagship chip production.
