UK Startup Space Forge Secures $30M to Advance In-Space Manufacturing of Semiconductor Materials
Space Forge, a Cardiff-based startup, has raised $30 million in Series A funding to manufacture advanced semiconductor materials in space. Leveraging the microgravity and thermal conditions of orbit, the company aims to produce high-quality crystals with fewer defects than Earth-based manufacturing allows. These defect-free materials could significantly reduce energy consumption in applications such as 5G infrastructure, quantum computing, and defense systems. The investment round was led by the NATO Innovation Fund and includes strategic partnerships with entities like Northrop Grumman. The startup’s approach combines existing launch technology with innovative return mechanisms, including an umbrella-like heat shield named Pridwen and a recovery net called Fielder. Despite a failed 2023 mission due to a Virgin Orbit rocket anomaly, Space Forge is preparing to launch its ForgeStar-1 demonstrator under the mission name ‘The Forge Awakens’. The company is also expanding its European presence with a new office in the Azores, signaling long-term plans for a return infrastructure in Europe. Space Forge positions itself as a sustainable, carbon-negative solution for the future of chip production, although large-scale emissions benefits remain to be proven. The geopolitical climate and growing demand for semiconductor independence in Europe bolster its relevance.
