SpaceX Seeks Access to 80,000 U.S. Cell Tower Sites for Starlink Mobile Expansion

SpaceX is reportedly in discussions to gain access to approximately 80,000 cellular tower sites across the United States as part of its strategy to launch Starlink Mobile as a fourth nationwide wireless carrier. During a recent earnings call, Elon Musk stated that SpaceX would be building out terrestrial networks to provide broad-based connectivity wherever the company is permitted to operate. The company is reportedly negotiating with major tower owners such as Crown Castle, American Tower, and Vertical Bridge Holdings. Crown Castle’s CEO, Chris Hillabrant, confirmed that the company is in talks with SpaceX and other satellite-based telecom providers but declined to disclose specific details. Mobile carriers typically lease space on towers for their equipment rather than owning and maintaining them, which is more cost-effective. The potential deals with SpaceX could be worth billions of dollars. The move is part of SpaceX’s broader strategy to combine satellite connectivity with terrestrial networks, aiming to provide comprehensive coverage in both urban and remote areas. This approach could introduce significant competition in the U.S. wireless market, potentially driving down prices and improving service quality for consumers. The company has already acquired low-band spectrum specifically for this purpose, separate from its satellite spectrum. While some critics express concerns about Musk’s growing influence over communication infrastructure, the potential benefits of increased competition in the wireless industry are notable. The development represents a significant step in SpaceX’s evolution from a space exploration company to a major player in telecommunications.
