SpaceX Starship Test Flight Fails Due to Fuel Leaks and Re-entry Breakup

A SpaceX Starship rocket test flight failed for the third consecutive time after spinning out of control approximately 30 minutes post-launch due to fuel leaks. The rocket subsequently broke up upon re-entry into Earth’s atmosphere, dashing hopes of reaching the Indian Ocean. Although the rocket had shown progress compared to previous failed launches in January and March, plans to deploy mock satellites were aborted due to a payload door malfunction. Furthermore, the Super Heavy booster, being reused for the first time, missed its intended soft landing and crashed into the Gulf of Mexico. Despite the setback, Elon Musk characterized the test flight as a ‘big improvement’ and committed to accelerating the pace of future launches, scheduling the next three flights within three to four weeks. SpaceX maintains its ambition to utilize Starship for transporting people and cargo to Mars, although these repeated failures cast doubt on the timeline. NASA relies on significant advancements in Starship within the next year to achieve its goal of returning astronauts to the moon. A speech by Musk detailing his space exploration ambitions has been postponed. The company stated on X that the test will provide valuable lessons to improve Starship’s reliability.
