SpaceX’s Dragon Completes Successful Orbital Boost Test for ISS Maintenance

SpaceX’s Dragon spacecraft has successfully completed a critical test designed to help maintain the International Space Station’s (ISS) orbital altitude. This new capability was tested by utilizing two Draco engines in the spacecraft’s trunk section, achieving a five-minute orbital boost. The maneuver raised the ISS’s altitude by approximately 1 mile (1.6 kilometers), ensuring its orbit remained stable at 260.9 x 256.3 miles above Earth. The test was confirmed by NASA, marking a significant step forward in maintaining the station’s orbit without relying on traditional boosting mechanisms. This innovation will help offset the effects of atmospheric drag, which slowly reduces the ISS’s altitude over time. The Dragon spacecraft is equipped with an independent propellant system, distinct from the ISS’s current boosting systems. SpaceX plans to conduct further boosts during the fall of 2025 to ensure the ISS remains at its correct orbit. The Dragon spacecraft was launched as part of SpaceX’s 33rd commercial resupply mission and will stay docked until December or early January, before returning with research and cargo. This development is crucial for the future operation of the ISS, which is expected to continue until 2030-2031, after which it will be deorbited in a controlled manner.
