Spanish man arrested for booking luxury hotel rooms using a cyber payment hack

Spanish authorities have arrested a 20-year-old man in Madrid for allegedly hacking a hotel booking system to reserve luxury rooms for just one cent. The suspect is accused of exploiting the website’s payment validation system, allowing him to pay only €0.01 for rooms normally costing up to €1,000 per night. Over several stays, he reportedly accumulated more than €20,000 in charges while staying at luxury hotels. The irregularities were detected when the payment platform transferred the actual transaction amount of €0.01 to the hotel. Police investigation revealed that the suspect used his real identity for the bookings and carried out the scheme over multiple hotels. His last stay in Madrid alone, which lasted four nights, should have cost €4,000. Additional unpaid charges included mini-bar items. Authorities also noted the suspect had previously been arrested in the Canary Islands for similar hotel stays. This is considered the first detected case of its kind in Spain, highlighting a novel method of cybercrime targeting hotel payment systems. The investigation was completed within four days.
