Spotify Introduces Age Verification for Accessing 18+ Content Under UK Law

Following the enactment of the UK’s Online Safety Act, Spotify has introduced a mandatory age verification process for UK users who wish to access age-restricted content, such as 18+ music videos. The verification process requires users to undergo biometric face scanning using their device’s camera or upload a government-issued ID to confirm their age. Failure to pass the verification or an inability to confirm one’s age will result in the deletion of the Spotify account. The age verification is being implemented through a third-party system called Yoti. This law aims to protect children from harmful content but has raised concerns over privacy and user data security. Critics argue that such age verification systems create barriers to access for adults and are easily circumvented by children using VPNs or non-compliant websites. Despite backlash, including from the UK Reform Party, who has vowed to repeal the law, similar age checks have already been applied to other online platforms. The new policy follows the increasing trend of age-verification requirements, notably in the adult industry, to comply with governmental regulations. Some users have reacted negatively, calling it a step towards censorship.
