Starlink Receives Regulatory Approval to Begin Launch Process in India

Elon Musk’s Starlink satellite internet service has received preliminary approval from the Indian Department of Telecommunications, marking a significant step toward its official launch in India, the world’s second-largest internet market. This approval allows Starlink to begin the process of meeting licensing requirements, including submitting compliance documentation. India recently established new security rules for satellite communication operators such as Starlink, Amazon’s Kuiper, and others, enabling the government to monitor and restrict certain content and traffic. Additionally, Starlink must obtain clearance from India’s space regulator, IN-SPACe, before fully rolling out services. Although the official launch is expected within six to nine months, this move signals a positive shift after previous regulatory challenges, including a 2022 reprimand for operating without licenses. Starlink’s entry into India is strategically important given the country’s large population of over 1.4 billion and nearly 950 million internet users. The company faces competition from other satellite internet providers like OneWeb and Jio SpaceFiber, which already have regulatory approvals. The Indian government has yet to finalize spectrum allocation details for satellite internet services. Starlink’s progress coincides with Elon Musk’s planned visit to India and ongoing partnerships with major Indian telecom companies Airtel and Reliance Jio, highlighting the growing interest in expanding high-speed internet access across the country.
