Velcro-style system offers easy wall replacements in sustainable building designs
A new hook-and-loop technology, being developed at Graz University of Technology in Austria, promises to simplify the replacement of interior walls in buildings. This Velcro-like fastening system allows non-load-bearing walls to be removed and replaced by hand, without damaging the building’s main structure. The system is part of the ReCon sustainable construction project, which aims to extend the lifespan of buildings by enabling easier replacement of components like walls or flooring. The technique involves embedding small mushroom-head-shaped hooks into the building’s concrete (or wood for wood-frame structures). The removable panels are fitted with loops that engage with the hooks, allowing them to be easily swapped out when needed. To further enhance this system, the project explores the use of RFID tags or QR codes on the panels to notify when they need replacement. The innovation not only helps with building maintenance but also reduces the need for full demolition during renovations, significantly reducing environmental impact and waste.
