T-Mobile Expands Satellite Connectivity with Support for Popular iPhone and Android Apps
T-Mobile’s T-Satellite service, launched earlier this summer, allows users to send text messages and contact emergency services in areas without cellular coverage. Starting in September, several popular iPhone and Android apps have become compatible with T-Mobile’s Starlink-based satellite network, which enables users to communicate in remote locations. Apple and Google have joined forces to ensure that apps such as mapping, fitness, and weather apps can now work in satellite mode. This update came ahead of the initial October release date, showcasing the ongoing collaboration between T-Mobile, Apple, and Google.
Supported apps include Apple apps like Apple Compass, Apple Fitness, and Apple Maps, alongside Android apps such as Google Maps, AccuWeather, WhatsApp, and AllTrails. These apps can now send and receive data via the satellite service, providing essential functionalities even when users are off the grid.
T-Mobile’s satellite service works regardless of the plan type, offering access either through the Experience Beyond plan or as an add-on to other T-Mobile plans. This expansion highlights the growing importance of satellite connectivity in mobile technology, especially in remote areas where traditional cell networks are unavailable.
