Tanzania Promotes Electric Vehicles to Cut Transport Costs

Dar es Salaam – Tanzania dey push for electric vehicle (EV) usage as research show say operating EVs fit cost about 85 percent less per kilometer than petrol or diesel vehicles. According to Engineer Felchesmi Mramba, the Permanent Secretary wa Ministry of Energy, normal fuel vehicles dey cost around TZS 200 per kilometer, while EVs go cost just TZS 25 per kilometer. This shows say EV technology fit really reduce transport expenses for ordinary citizens. The launch of EV usage through DOW ELEF AUTO EV (ZERA) Limited marks big step for the country’s transport sector transformation. This initiative dey in line with the Sixth Phase Government efforts under President Dr. Samia Suluhu Hassan to encourage clean energy investments. Government don put in place National Electric Vehicles Policy Framework since December 2024, to support local EV production, expand EV usage, integrate with renewable energy, and develop charging infrastructure. Tanzania also dey improve electricity generation, with capacity over 4,500 MW and access at 85.5 percent by 2025. East Africa dey emerge as hub for EV innovation, and Tanzania get about 10,000 EVs already, including motorcycles and other small vehicles.
