Tanzania Strengthens National ID System to Boost Services and Security

Tanzania is making big strides in modernising its national identification system, under the leadership of the National Identification Authority (NIDA). Over the years, NIDA has been improving citizen registration, speeding up the issuance of identity cards, and promoting the use of the National Identification Number (NIN) across important sectors like banking, healthcare, education, and employment. The Managing Director, James Kaji, emphasises that strong teamwork, accountability, and innovation among staff are vital for providing efficient services. Achievements include faster processing of identity cards, especially in Mwanza, which has reduced long delays and public complaints. However, challenges remain such as delays in some areas due to high demand and limited resources. NIDA is adopting digital tools, like SMS-based services, to let citizens track card status without travelling long distances. The government is also improving staff conditions through better salaries, equipment, and training. Public cooperation is crucial, as some citizens still do not collect their cards, slowing the system. Officials like Permanent Secretary Ally Senga Gugu highlight that national IDs are not just administrative tools but essential for security, governance, and participation in the digital economy. Moving forward, NIDA aims to expand services to rural areas, refine policies, and ensure no citizen is left out, supporting Tanzania’s digital future and national development.
