Tech stocks decline as investors worry about an AI bubble
Shares of major tech companies have dropped, as investors express concerns over the high valuations of firms tied to artificial intelligence (AI). The rise of the so-called ‘AI bubble’ this year has driven tech stocks to record highs, prompting fears of a market correction. Major Asian indexes, particularly in Japan, experienced steep declines following a sell-off in the US stock market. SoftBank, a significant investor in AI technology, saw its stock plunge by more than 10%. Similar concerns about AI-related stocks emerged in the US, where renowned investor Michael Burry, known for his role in ‘The Big Short’, placed a $1.1 billion bet on the decline of stocks such as Nvidia and Palantir. This follows a year of increasing market enthusiasm around AI, with companies like Nvidia, Intel, and AMD benefiting from investor optimism. However, despite Amazon reaching record highs after announcing a deal with OpenAI, many other tech stocks, including Nvidia, dropped significantly. Financial analysts point to overinflated valuations, with high spending in AI-focused firms failing to generate sufficient returns. Experts believe this trend may continue throughout the year as investors reassess the long-term viability of these stocks.
