US Government Investigates Tesla Over Traffic Violations by Self-Driving Cars

The U.S. National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) has launched an investigation into Tesla after reports that the company’s self-driving cars violated traffic laws. These incidents include vehicles driving on the wrong side of the road and failing to stop at red lights. The agency has identified 58 such reports and estimates that approximately 2.9 million Tesla cars with Full Self-Driving (FSD) technology could be affected. FSD, which is an optional feature for Tesla owners, allows cars to change lanes and make turns automatically, but drivers are required to remain alert and take control when necessary. The investigation will examine the scope, frequency, and safety implications of these violations. Some incidents have caused crashes, with four resulting in injuries, including cases where cars began moving at intersections while the traffic light was still red. NHTSA also noted that certain reports describe situations where drivers had minimal warning or opportunity to intervene. Tesla has already taken steps to correct issues at specific intersections. This investigation adds to ongoing scrutiny of Tesla, which is also being investigated for door-locking mechanisms following reports of children trapped inside vehicles. The company recently introduced more affordable models to compete with other electric vehicle manufacturers.
