Tesla Applies to Expand Robotaxi Service to Arizona After Austin Launch

Tesla has taken the first steps toward expanding its fledgling robotaxi service to Arizona by applying to test and operate autonomous vehicles in the Metro Phoenix area. The company has already launched a limited robotaxi service in South Austin and aims to broaden the service to a broader population. Tesla reached out to Arizona’s Department of Transportation (DOT) to begin the certification process, requesting permission to operate both with and without drivers. This move follows CEO Elon Musk’s announcement that the company plans to roll out the service further into Austin soon. In Arizona, Tesla’s application process is more straightforward than in states like California, where additional permits are required for autonomous vehicle testing and deployment. However, the company still needs to acquire a Transportation Network Company (TNC) permit to operate a paid ride-hailing service. Tesla’s expansion plans might face regulatory hurdles, but they follow in the footsteps of other companies like Waymo, which already operates a driverless robotaxi service in the Metro Phoenix area. Tesla is hoping for approval by the end of July, but local law enforcement and government officials will be consulted before any launch proceeds.
