Tesla falls short of 2025 production target for Optimus humanoid robots
Tesla is significantly behind schedule in meeting its goal to produce at least 5,000 Optimus humanoid robots by the end of 2025. As of nearly eight months into the year, the company has only produced a few hundred units, according to multiple sources. This shortfall indicates that Tesla must either accelerate its production pace considerably or delay its deadline. The reported production lag coincides with Tesla’s recent financial challenges, including a 12% decline in overall revenue during Q2 2025, attributed to falling electric vehicle sales, reduced regulatory credits, and a drop in solar and energy storage sales. Despite these setbacks, Tesla CEO Elon Musk expressed optimism during the Q2 earnings call, announcing plans to start production of the latest Optimus 3 design by early next year and aspiring to scale production to one million units per year within five years. However, Musk’s history of ambitious robotics and autonomous vehicle timelines, such as the proposed robotaxi fleets that have yet to materialize, suggests caution in projecting future milestones. Tesla’s Optimus project reflects ongoing challenges in robotics manufacturing and scaling complex humanoid robots to mass production within ambitious timeframes.
