Tesla Faces Regulatory Hurdles in Attempt to Launch Robotaxis in San Francisco

Tesla is preparing to launch a limited version of its robotaxi service in San Francisco, following a similar launch in Austin, Texas. The service, which is invite-only, will allow Tesla owners to test the robotaxi experience. However, Tesla faces significant regulatory challenges. In California, the Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) regulates autonomous vehicles and requires permits for testing and deployment. Tesla holds a permit for autonomous vehicle testing with a driver, but it lacks the necessary permits for driverless testing or deployment. Additionally, the California Public Utilities Commission (CPUC) has not granted Tesla the necessary authorizations for providing autonomous passenger services. This means Tesla’s robotaxi service, even with a human safety driver, may violate state laws. On top of this, Tesla is also embroiled in a lawsuit related to its Autopilot system. Despite these challenges, Tesla has launched a limited version of the robotaxi service in Austin, with a human safety operator in the car. While this service remains restricted to a small area and a handful of vehicles, Elon Musk aims to expand the service to other states like Florida and Arizona. Tesla has yet to prove that its Full Self-Driving software is capable of supporting a widespread robotaxi network.
