Tesla Begins Limited Robotaxi Pilot Program in Austin With Safety Monitors Onboard

Tesla has launched a limited robotaxi service in Austin, Texas, marking its first step into the autonomous ride-hailing market. The pilot involves about 20 Model Y vehicles operating autonomously between 6 am and noon, and is currently invite-only. Passengers pay a flat $4.20 fare and may bring one guest, provided they are over 18. Tesla employees sit in the front passenger seat of each vehicle to monitor safety, though not in the driver’s seat. The company has plans to eventually deploy a dedicated ‘Cybercab’ model by next year. The service is restricted to select areas in South Austin and excludes major destinations like the airport. Teleoperation is expected to supplement the service, allowing remote drivers to intervene when needed. Tesla’s approach to autonomy uses only cameras, unlike rivals who utilize a variety of sensors. This has sparked concerns from safety experts due to Tesla’s mixed record with its existing Autopilot and Full Self-Driving (Supervised) technologies. While Tesla claims a strong focus on safety, the technology has previously faced recalls and regulatory scrutiny. Despite Tesla’s ambitions, competitors such as Waymo, Cruise, and Zoox are currently more established in the autonomous vehicle sector.
