SpaceX-Backed Vote Leads to Incorporation of Starbase as a City in Texas

In a decisive vote, residents in South Texas, most of whom are affiliated with SpaceX, approved the incorporation of a new municipality named Starbase in the Boca Chica Village area. With a vote count of 212-6, the move formalizes the transformation of the once-quiet coastal area into a city centered around SpaceX’s operations. Over 60% of voters work for SpaceX, and most of the land is owned by the company or its employees. The city, spanning 1.5 square miles and hosting over 200 residents, is now led by a local government composed entirely of current or former SpaceX personnel. Elon Musk’s vision for Starbase as a hub for space travel and Mars colonization continues to drive development. However, environmentalists and Indigenous groups voice concerns over the ecological and cultural impacts of rapid industrialization. Allegations of water pollution and habitat destruction have been raised, and although a lawsuit was dropped and a federal fine settled, mistrust remains. Despite opposition, the city status gives SpaceX greater control over local development, aligning with Musk’s broader strategic shift of business operations to Texas. This incorporation is seen as a significant milestone for SpaceX’s future plans, while also intensifying debate around corporate influence and environmental stewardship.
