Galaxy Watch 8 Introduces Battery Protection Feature to Extend Longevity

Samsung has introduced a new feature for the Galaxy Watch 8 series that aims to extend the lifespan of the device’s battery. The ‘battery protection’ feature, found in the One UI 8 Watch software, works by limiting the watch’s charge to between 85% and 90%. When the battery reaches 90%, charging halts, and it resumes when the charge drops to 85%. This prevents the battery from staying at a full 100%, which can cause stress and shorten its life over time. Many smartwatches do not offer this type of protection, unlike smartphones which often include such features to safeguard battery health. Samsung’s new approach is particularly important as it is known that keeping lithium-ion batteries at full charge can lead to quicker degradation. This feature could be a significant benefit for users who tend to keep their smartwatches for extended periods. While this feature is currently available for the Galaxy Watch 8, there is hope that it might be rolled out to older Galaxy Watch models via an update. While 80% charging limits are ideal for battery longevity, Samsung has opted for 90% in this case to avoid negatively impacting user experience, especially given the smaller battery sizes in smartwatches.
