Origins and Development of the QR Code: A Japanese Innovation
The QR code was invented in 1994 by Japanese engineer Masahiro Hara and his team at Denso Wave, a subsidiary of Toyota. This innovation was created to improve upon traditional one-dimensional barcodes, which were limited in capacity and could not support Japanese characters. The QR code is a two-dimensional matrix that stores data both horizontally and vertically, allowing it to hold significantly more information and be read at greater speeds than conventional barcodes. Initially developed to track automotive parts efficiently, QR codes soon found widespread applications beyond the automotive industry. In 2002, the rise of mobile phones with QR code reading features helped popularize their use among the general public in Japan. Since then, QR codes have become ubiquitous worldwide, utilized in areas such as marketing, payment systems, inventory management, and digital menus, with accelerated adoption during the COVID-19 pandemic due to contactless requirements. Denso Wave’s decision to make the QR code specification publicly available without exercising patent rights also contributed significantly to its global spread, positioning it as a freely accessible and essential technology in modern digital interactions.
