Why Unpowered SSDs May Lose Data Over Time and How to Protect It
While SSDs have largely replaced traditional hard drives due to their speed, convenience, and low power consumption, they are not ideal for long-term, unpowered storage. Unlike hard drives that store data magnetically, SSDs store information by modifying electrical charges in NAND flash cells. This data can degrade over time if the drive is left unpowered. Consumer-grade SSDs, which typically use QLC or TLC NAND, can lose data after 1 to 3 years without power, while higher-end MLC and SLC NAND can last longer. Temperature, NAND quality, and voltage loss are factors that affect data retention. Despite this, most users do not need to worry, as primary SSDs in active use rarely sit unpowered for extended periods. However, for long-term storage or archival purposes, relying solely on SSDs is risky. Experts recommend maintaining backups using multiple storage methods, following the 3-2-1 rule: three copies of data on at least two different media, with one copy off-site. Ultimately, while SSDs are suitable for everyday storage, they should not be considered a permanent solution for unpowered data archiving.
