Smart Glasses for Real-Time Transcription and Translation of Conversations

TranscribeGlass is a new pair of smart eyeglasses designed to help individuals who are deaf or hard of hearing. These glasses feature a built-in transcription system that generates subtitles in real time, displaying them directly in the wearer’s field of vision. Weighing just 36 grams, these lightweight glasses use a small waveguide projector in one lens to beam text onto the glass. The accompanying app (currently available for iOS) processes the conversation and offers features like adjusting subtitle placement and text speed. The glasses offer an eight-hour battery life, and cost about $377, with a $20-per-month subscription fee for the transcription service. In the future, TranscribeGlass plans to introduce real-time language translation and tone analysis capabilities, which could help individuals understand not just what is being said but the emotion behind the words. These glasses compete with other similar devices from companies like XRAI and Even realities, but Lavakare, the founder, believes that the simplicity and focus on core functionality make TranscribeGlass unique. Despite some limitations, including grainy text and a slight shimmer on the lenses, the glasses have shown potential in offering a valuable tool for better communication, especially for the hard-of-hearing community.
