Researchers Develop Biodegradable Probiotic-Powered Batteries for Safe Disposable Electronics
Scientists at Binghamton University, led by Professor Seokheun Choi, have developed a new type of biodegradable battery inspired by the self-destructing gadgets seen in the ‘Mission: Impossible’ films. The innovation tackles a major challenge in the field of transient electronics: creating a safe, non-toxic power source that can disappear after use. Instead of relying on conventional toxic materials found in most batteries, the team explored the use of probiotics—beneficial bacteria commonly found in foods like yogurt—to generate electricity. By engineering paper-based batteries that dissolve in acidic environments, such as the human digestive system or polluted areas, the researchers demonstrated a proof of concept for safe, disposable power sources. The team enhanced the battery’s performance by creating a porous, rough electrode surface that encourages bacterial growth and electrogenic activity, and by coating the paper with a pH-sensitive polymer to control when the battery dissolves. While the current prototypes produce only small amounts of power, the research opens the door to future advancements in biodegradable electronics for medical and environmental applications. The next steps include identifying which probiotic strains are most effective at generating electricity and improving the battery’s output by connecting multiple units. This breakthrough could lead to safer, more sustainable disposable electronics.
