Meta’s New Bracelet Translates Hand Gestures into Computer Commands
Meta, the parent company of Facebook, has unveiled a new wearable device that can translate hand gestures into computer commands. The bracelet, developed within Meta’s Reality Labs, converts electrical signals generated by wrist muscle movements into computer actions, without requiring calibration or invasive procedures. It works by using deep learning models that improve as more people use the device. One of its most impressive features is the ability to translate fine motor movements, like dotting an ‘i’ or writing letters, into text at a speed of 20.9 words per minute, which, although slower than the average typing speed, demonstrates its potential for people with disabilities or amputees. The bracelet uses Bluetooth and offers personalized performance improvements for a variety of users. It is expected to be particularly beneficial for individuals with disabilities, those who use multiple monitors, or below-the-elbow amputees. Despite Meta’s focus on virtual reality through its Metaverse project, the bracelet signals a shift towards more practical and marketable technology solutions.
