Modern Two-Wheeled Robot Plotters Revive 1980s Logo Programming

In the 1980s, schools often had small two-wheeled robots used for teaching basic vector graphics via the Logo programming language. These robots have since faded from memory, but Niklas Roy has revived the concept with a modern twist. His two-wheeled robots now act as plotters, drawing artwork with remarkable accuracy. Using an Arduino Nano as the brain, these robots calculate paths between coordinates for precise drawings. Though originally designed for artistic purposes, they could easily be adapted for functional plotting tasks. One of the most exciting aspects is a ‘drawing battle’ between the plotter bots and an eraser bot, which creates dynamic and playful artwork. This project is a nod to nostalgia for many who remember the early days of computer programming in schools, and the files for building your own version are available for download. It’s a simple yet effective take on a classic concept that highlights both creativity and technical ingenuity.
