Meta Launches Separate Direct Messaging Inbox for Threads Users

Meta has announced that its social network Threads will begin testing a dedicated direct message (DM) inbox, independent from Instagram’s messaging system. Previously, Threads users had to rely on Instagram to communicate privately, but the new feature will allow them to chat within Threads itself. The initial rollout will occur in select regions, including Hong Kong, Thailand, and Argentina, with plans for wider availability in the near future. The DM function will start with support for one-on-one conversations, with no group messaging yet. This move comes after feedback from Threads users who wanted a more seamless messaging experience without switching between apps. Meta’s decision reflects the evolving nature of Threads, which has developed its own distinct user base, separate from Instagram. The company had previously considered integrating Threads DMs with Instagram, but recognized that many users interact with different communities on each platform. Despite the positive reception, Meta is somewhat late to the game; competitors like Bluesky and X (formerly Twitter) have already introduced advanced messaging features, including group chats and file sharing. Nevertheless, the introduction of a standalone DM inbox is expected to enhance user engagement and convenience on Threads.
