TikTok Enhances AI Moderation to Ensure Teens’ Safety Despite Job Cuts

TikTok’s Director of Public Policy for Northern Europe, Ali Law, addressed concerns over the platform’s increasing reliance on AI for content moderation. With AI now handling 85% of violative content without human involvement, the company is reducing its network of human moderators, which has sparked worries, especially in the UK. Critics, including unions and lawmakers, argue that AI cannot be trusted to ensure online safety for young users. Law defended the changes, emphasizing the sophistication of AI, which now better understands context, such as distinguishing between a knife used in cooking and one used in violence. He assured that TikTok would maintain human oversight to monitor AI’s performance. Additionally, the company is rolling out new features, like a Time and Wellbeing hub, to promote safer and more balanced usage among younger users. Despite these efforts, concerns remain about the potential risks of over-relying on technology for child safety.
