TikTok’s Future in the US: Sale Deadline Extended and What Users Should Expect

The future of TikTok in the United States remains uncertain as President Donald Trump has extended the deadline for the app’s sale to an approved buyer by another 75 days. This follows a law signed by former President Joe Biden in 2024, which mandates that TikTok’s China-based parent company, ByteDance, must sell the app to a US-approved entity or face a ban. Major companies such as Amazon and Oracle have shown interest, but no agreement has been reached. If a sale does not occur, app stores like Apple and Google will be required to remove TikTok from their platforms, preventing new downloads and updates. Existing users will still have access to the app, but without updates, the user experience may deteriorate and security risks could increase. The law also prohibits access via web browsers and internet providers. Users are advised to download any important videos before the deadline. While VPNs or proxy servers might allow continued access by masking users’ locations, these methods may not offer full privacy or security. The situation is fluid, with ongoing negotiations and potential policy changes, as the US government considers both national security and economic factors in its decision-making.
