TikTok adds AI-generated alt text and new visual accessibility settings
TikTok has rolled out new accessibility features to make its platform more inclusive for users with visual impairments. After previously enabling manual alt text support for still images, the platform is now testing AI-generated alt text that automatically describes photos when creators haven’t provided their own descriptions. This is intended to support screen reader users by ensuring that more images are accompanied by text descriptions, even if the AI-generated content is not always perfect. Creators retain the option to edit or add manual alt text before or after posting.
In addition to image descriptions, TikTok has introduced two new visual accessibility improvements. First, users can now toggle a color contrast enhancement that makes text, icons, and other interface elements more distinct—an aid for individuals with low vision or contrast sensitivity. Second, for users who have bold text enabled in their device settings, TikTok will automatically display all app text in bold.
These features are part of TikTok’s broader accessibility update and are available on the app’s redesigned accessibility settings page. The settings can be accessed via the profile menu on iOS and Android, or the left-hand taskbar on desktop.
