TikTok to reduce UK content moderation staff as it shifts towards AI technology

TikTok has announced plans to lay off hundreds of content moderators in the UK, specifically those working in the Trust and Safety team. This restructuring aligns with TikTok’s global strategy to consolidate its operations and increasingly use artificial intelligence to moderate content, aiming to enhance efficiency while reducing human exposure to distressing material. The layoffs also affect hundreds of moderators in parts of Asia, with impacted employees being offered priority for other internal roles if they meet qualifications. Despite these changes, TikTok continues to use a mix of AI and human moderators, with automated systems reportedly removing 85% of posts that violate platform rules. The move comes amidst heightened regulatory pressure in the UK following the introduction of the Online Safety Act, which imposes strict responsibilities and potential fines on social media companies to protect users, especially minors. TikTok has recently introduced new parental controls but faces criticism and an ongoing investigation by UK regulators into its safety measures for teenagers. The Communication Workers Union has criticized the layoffs, warning about overreliance on immature AI technology that could jeopardize public safety and workers’ wellbeing. The decision coincides with union recognition votes among TikTok’s UK staff.
