Overview of the New Windowing Features in iPadOS 26
iPadOS 26 introduces significant changes to the iPad’s multitasking and window management system, offering more flexible options for app windows. The most notable change is the introduction of ‘Windowed Apps,’ allowing users to resize and move app windows freely on the screen, providing a desktop-like experience. This marks a big improvement over the previous full-screen app model. One key feature that’s been removed is the Slide Over multitasking mode, though it has returned in a more limited form in iPadOS 26.1. Stage Manager, a tool for grouping apps and managing multiple windows, has been relegated to the Settings menu, meaning it’s no longer accessible via the Control Center. The new windowing system lets users resize windows by dragging a grab handle or flicking apps into different screen sections with simple gestures. Additionally, new controls such as the three traffic light icons in the top left corner of each window allow users to easily move or resize apps. Although Split View remains, its functionality is somewhat limited with the addition of the new windowing features. Overall, the new system enhances the iPad’s multitasking capabilities and provides a more intuitive and customizable user experience.
