Software Engineer Shifts from Python Web Development to Systems Programming with Go and Rust
Stepan Russu, a first-year Software Engineering student, has announced his transition from Python web development to systems programming using Go and Rust. Russu, who previously worked with Python and Django in the high-level web development ecosystem, expressed a desire to delve deeper into systems programming, focusing on understanding network operations, operating system processes, and creating resource-efficient software. He has set up a new development environment on Windows 10 with WSL 2 (Debian), VS Code with WSL integration, and Docker for future infrastructure scaling. Russu shared that he successfully compiled and ran his first ‘Hello, World!’ program in Go within WSL, marking the beginning of his journey. His goals for the coming year include mastering low-level fundamentals such as memory management, pointers, and asynchronous I/O primitives, building multiple MVPs ranging from simple tools to useful applications, and eventually developing security agents for the Linux kernel using Rust by his third year. Russu plans to document his entire journey on DEV Community, sharing his progress, wins, ideas, and mistakes, and invites the community to provide support, advice, and constructive criticism. He has also shared his GitHub profile (https://github.com/arkpil60) where he will post his code and projects, though it currently contains minimal content. The article emphasizes Russu’s commitment to learning beyond his university curriculum and his focus on practical, hands-on development in systems programming. The summary highlights his technical setup, learning objectives, and community engagement strategy, providing a clear overview of his transition and future plans in the field of systems programming.
