Tesla and Other Automakers Recall 3 Million Cars Over Hidden Emergency Door Handles in China

Tesla is recalling nearly 3 million vehicles in China as part of a nationwide effort to address hidden emergency door releases, which could trap occupants during crashes or fires. This recall involves 11 Chinese automakers, including Xiaomi, Xpeng, and Geely, who are installing warning labels and pushing software updates to improve safety. The issue stems from electronic door latches becoming the standard, making manual releases harder to locate in emergencies. China banned hidden electronically-actuated exterior door handles from 2027 following a two-year review, while U.S. regulators are investigating Tesla’s system. Companies like Rivian and Ford have faced similar challenges, with Rivian relocating its manual release mechanism and Ford pausing sales of the Mustang Mach-E in 2025. Tesla plans to redesign its door handles moving forward, reflecting broader industry concerns about balancing convenience with safety.
