Trump Grants TikTok a 90-Day Extension Amid Ongoing Sale Talks
President Donald Trump is set to extend the deadline for TikTok to be sold or face a ban in the United States, marking the third such extension since taking office this year. The move gives TikTok an additional 90 days to finalize a sale to a U.S. entity, as required under a law signed by former President Joe Biden to address national security concerns over Chinese ownership of the platform. White House Press Secretary Karoline Leavitt stated that this extension is to ensure the deal is completed and that American users’ data remains secure. TikTok’s Chinese parent company, ByteDance, has yet to comment on the latest development.
Trump previously attempted to force a sale of TikTok during his first term in 2020, and despite earlier criticisms, he now praises the platform, crediting it with helping him win young voters in the 2024 election. Multiple American bidders, including Oracle and investor groups led by figures such as Kevin O’Leary, Alexis Ohanian, and MrBeast, have shown interest in acquiring the app. Although the U.S. and China were reportedly close to a deal in April, key regulatory approvals remain pending.
Industry analysts suggest the extension makes a full ban unlikely during Trump’s term, and TikTok’s recent expansion into AI tools signals confidence in its U.S. future.
