Two Teenagers Arrested for Major Transport for London Cyber Attack
Two teenagers, Thalha Jubair (19) from east London and Owen Flowers (18) from Walsall, have been charged in connection with a cyber attack on Transport for London (TfL) that occurred on August 31st, 2023. The attack is believed to have been carried out by the cyber-criminal group Scattered Spider. The incident caused significant disruption to TfL services, which lasted for several months. As a result of the attack, sensitive data, including names, email addresses, bank account details, and home addresses, were compromised. TfL notified approximately 5,000 customers about the potential unauthorized access to their personal information. The National Crime Agency (NCA) and City of London Police arrested both individuals and charged them under the Computer Misuse Act for conspiring to commit unauthorized acts. The NCA has emphasized that the attack caused millions of pounds in losses and disrupted vital national infrastructure. Both defendants appeared in Westminster Magistrates Court, where they were formally charged, but neither spoke to each other during the proceedings. The NCA warned earlier this year about the growing threat posed by cybercriminal gangs, with Scattered Spider being a notable example. Despite ongoing efforts, TfL continues to deal with the aftermath of the hack.
