Pro-Iranian Hackers Release Historical Personal Data of FBI Director Kash Patel

A pro-Iranian hacking group known as Handala claimed responsibility for accessing the personal account of FBI Director Kash Patel. The group posted online a variety of personal documents, including years-old photographs, a resume, and emails. Most of the material appeared to be more than a decade old and related to Patel’s personal travels and professional history prior to his confirmation as FBI Director. The FBI stated that the information targeted is historical and contains no government data, while confirming steps have been taken to mitigate potential risks. The timing of the hack remains unclear, although reports suggest Patel had been alerted previously to being targeted as part of Iranian cyber activity. Handala, which has also been involved in recent attacks on U.S. businesses, described the breach as retaliation for alleged U.S. military actions that harmed Iranian civilians. The U.S. Justice Department recently seized domains linked to the group and is offering up to $10 million for information identifying its members, reflecting ongoing tensions in cyber conflict involving Iran and its proxy groups.
