Valve reveals new Steam Machine and Steam Frame VR headset as PC-console hybrids aimed at living rooms
Valve has announced a new Steam Machine console intended to compete with established gaming consoles from Microsoft and Sony. Marketed as a compact yet powerful gaming PC in a small package, the device runs on Valve’s Linux-based SteamOS and uses AMD graphics hardware. While positioned to optimize gaming from Valve’s vast Steam storefront, the release date for the Steam Machine remains early 2026 with pricing undisclosed. Valve emphasizes that the hardware will be compatible with a broad library and will indicate which games will work on the device prior to purchase. Industry analysts, however, caution that the concept may appeal mainly to existing Steam enthusiasts and “power users” rather than a broad audience, referencing the original 2014 Steam Machine which failed to gain traction. Alongside the Steam Machine, Valve introduced the Steam Frame VR headset, a wireless, streaming-focused device that doubles as a PC running SteamOS. These announcements come as competition among game-makers intensifies, with Microsoft pushing Game Pass and Sony awaiting the PlayStation 6. Analysts suggest Valve’s strategy signals a shift toward a PC-consoles hybrid model targeting living room gaming, though consumer uptake remains uncertain.
